The question: Can you build muscle and burn fat at the same time? I know a lot of you are probably familiar with bulking, the process of adding weight and some body fat in order to build as much muscle mass as possible. You’re probably familiar with cutting, the process of cutting body fat and losing body (and sometimes, losing some muscle) in order to look as shredded as possible. But can you actually build muscle while cutting? The answer is yes. Anything is possible. However, cutting does not create an optimal situation for building lean muscle mass (you’d typically want to be in a caloric surplus in order to optimize for lean muscle gain). A few factors that should be taken into account when considering whether or not you will be able to build lean muscle while cutting are: your genetics, your experience in the gym, your supplementation, your lifestyle. In short, yes, you can build muscle in a caloric deficit. It’s just not optimal.
